1.This season, designers focused on hemlines, creating skirts with two distinct tiers. Call it an exaggerated form of the peplum detail from previous seasons, and this time, it’s superflattering—the top tier is a genius way to camouflage wider hips.

Don’t worry, animal rights activists, horsehair does not come from our equine friends; it’s a synthetic fabric often used on the underskirts of gowns to create a cleaner shape and a crisper hemline. It works to create incredible volume and dimension on ballgowns and also provides a unique, frothy-yet-modern textural element.

Wearing a wedding gown in a non-white or ivory hue was, until recently, considered a pretty radical move. Then, a few seasons ago, we began seeing subtle pops of color—from the faintest hint of silver or lilac to bright lettuce green—but color was still the exception rather than the rule. This season, however, blush and pink shades appeared on dozens of runways, marking its official debut as an expected—not quirky—wedding gown hue.

Lace Sleeves

Since April bridal market fell just a few weeks before the Royal Wedding, several designers were inspired by Kate Middleton and what she might wear. For a great majority, this meant lace sleeves—a sleeker, more contemporary version of the voluminous sleeves that engulfed the young Princess Diana so many years ago. Turns out the recently dubbed Duchess of Cambridge did end up wearing lace sleeves to her wedding, and it’s only a matter of time before this regal look catches on in a big way. We can’t wait.

2. Food stations are another new catering angle. It’s not necessarily less formal, but people tend to socialize a little more. ( we, Greeks, already do that.  We are ahead.. by far!!!) The food truck revolution caught our attention this past year, and experts predict that it’s going to pick up steam in the coming months.

3. “Old-fashioned ice cream trucks, crème brûlée trucks or even bacon trucks offer a fun addition to the end of the night or the after party,” said Sasha Souza.

4. The traditional wedding cake is facing some frosty competition from petite mini-mes. While far from passé, tiered masterpiece cakes are getting passed over by brides opting instead for cute and festive cake pops, cupcakes or sweet smorgasbords of bite-sized cheesecakes, pastries and other dainty desserts.

5. Smaller centerpieces will reign supreme in 2012, especially in multiple container shapes and sizes. Consider a combination of exotic flowers mixed with the classics (roses, orchids, calla lillies) to add a modern feel to your wedding décor.

6. Go natural. Keeping with the romantic and nostalgic theme, flowers will be big full blooms. Peonies will be the perfect pairing to more classic gowns. If peonies aren’t your thing (who could not love such a gorgeous bloom?!) opt for soft shades of ivory or light pink. Add extra romance with subtle adornments of pearls. Simply stunning.

Which season do you prefer?

I know most of the people are writing about peace, happiness, money, no wars, no more financial crisis, I am Greek so I know very well what that means, but I want those shoes. So please Santa bring them to me!! I am just a woman.
